Several years ago, I was extended an invitation to attend a three day discussion with a small group of non-profit leaders and public policy experts in Washington D.C..
On the agenda at this three day event included a trip to the White House for a discussion. The circumstances that led to my invitation were extraordinary and is probably another story for another day.
I felt compelled to accept the invitation, so I said yes. As you might imagine, when I arrived, I felt very out of place with all the folks who were there that had high profile positions, held significant titles, and ran large organizations. My resume didn't exactly seem to fit the room, so to speak.
If I'm being completely transparent and honest, I felt an extraordinary amount of imposter syndrome. Nevertheless, I faced my discomfort and allowed myself to be there, to listen, and to add to the discussion where I was able.
Interestingly, the more that I was there, the more I began to see through the illusion and facade of power. I quickly saw that many of the people there were just as insecure as myself. I also began to see that the knowledge and authority that people at those levels of prestige and power seemingly carry isn’t often real.
Although this might sound harsh, I observed that many of these folks hadn't matured beyond middle school levels of social jockeying for popularity and acceptance. The more that I observed, the more this became evident.
Seeing through the illusion of political power and title helped me see that I too have a voice and a place at any table I find myself sitting.
My power resides in my presence and in my own being.
I believe this was a major reason that I was given the opportunity to go to Washington. I needed to learn that I am the president of my own life.
This is also true of you as well. It is our voice and presence that ultimately matters. It's how we show up to our day, to our relationships, and how we show up to our important work that truly makes a difference in the world and shapes our nation. Don't allow anyone to suggest otherwise.
On Monday of this week, whether you knew it or not, you were actually the most powerful and influential leader in your world. The same will be true today and tomorrow as well. Don’t be distracted or discouraged by the illusion of someone else gaining power over you.
No mater what transpires in our national elections today, you are always running your world and that is the only world that matters.
You have been elected,
