The Only Difference Between Heaven & Hell is Willingness.
The line between great suffering and agitation, and the state of joy and peace, is quite thin. I would like to propose that peace and suffering are a result of one thing...
Willingness.
Do you know what the difference is between rape and lovemaking? Yes, it's willingness.
Do you know the difference between service and slavery? Yes, it's willingness.
Do you know the difference between duty and devotion? Yes, it's willingness.
We all may know this at one level, but many of us are unaware of why we constantly struggle with life. Many of us struggle because our willingness is only partial, not total.
For example, if you were not alive you would have no willingness or unwillingness to do anything and would therefore not suffer. You also would not have peace and joy either.
Because we ARE alive, however, we do have willingness. This is a tremendous opportunity to experience the joy and bliss of life. Many of us suffer, unfortunately, because we have mixed this elixir of life with a distortion called unwillingness.
Think about your typical day. Our day unfolds in this moment. Depending on what's happening in the moment, we may become willing or unwilling to engage with this moment without resistance.
If we like what's happening, we become willing. If we don't like what's happening, we become unwilling and resist. This is the definition of stress.
The issue is, most of what happens in life is not in our direct control. Therefore, very little happens the way we want it to happen. As a result, we become unwilling and we suffer.
If you could learn to become willing as a way of being with life, you would have a tremendous sense of peace on your worst days, and bliss on your best days. That's heaven.
If you go to heaven and become unwilling to be there, that becomes hell for you. If you are in hell and decide to become willing to be there, that becomes heaven for you.
I have good news for us. The eternity of heaven is here with us now in this moment.
Have you learned how to be in a state of willingness with life in this moment, or have you mixed it with the hell of unwillingness?
May we become open to learn the art of being a willing participant with life in this moment.
